Location: Mississippi River, mile marker 38 Empire, LA

Info: The oil tanker Westchester lost steerage while transiting the Mississippi River. With the loss of steerage, the ship’s captain deployed the port anchor followed by the starboard anchor in an attempt to maintain control. Unfortunately, the vessel either struck its own anchor, an unidentified navigational hazard, or ran aground, causing an oil release. It leaked between 9000-10,000 barrels of light crude. It happened south of New Orleans.

Location: Unalaska-Aleutian Islands, AK

Info: A bad storm drove the M/V Selendang Ayu onto the rocks on the west side of Unalaska Island. The vessel broke in two releasing over 75% (337,000 gallons) of its total petroleum fuel products. Within two weeks the bow section had sunk. The stern section remained afloat with the balance of the fuel.

Info: The container ship, M/V Cosco Busan struck Bay Bridge in San Francisco, CA. An approximate 100 foot gash in the hull of the ship occurred, resulting in 58,000 gallons of fuel oil being released into the water.

Info: The barge Cibro Savannah exploded as it was being pulled from the dock at the CITGO facility in Linden, New Jersey. About 127,000 gallons of oil remained unaccounted for after the incident. It was unknown how much oil burned and how much spilled into the environment.

Info: The T/V Torrey Cannon ran aground on Pollard Rock on Seven Stones Reef off Lands End in England. Around 860,000 barrels was released into the sea or burned during the next 12 days. The accident was due to the master’s negligence.

Info: The Hebei Spirit was struck by a crane barge off the coast of South Korea, west of Taean county. The Hebei Spirit received three punctures and released about 2.8 million gallons of crude oil. Temporary patches were placed on the punctures.

Location: Gulf of Mexico, 57 miles SE of Galveston, Texas

Info: An explosion occurred in the pump room of the Mega Borg while the Fraqmura was lightering it. As a result of the explosion, a fire started on the Mega Borg and an estimated 100,000 barrels of Angolan Palanca crude was burned or released into the water during the next seven days. More oil was discharged when the Fraqmura broke away from the Mega Borg.

Barge Bouchard 155


Barge Bouchard 155

Location: Tampa Bay, Florida

Info: A collision occurred between the freighter Balsa 37, the barge Ocean 255, and the barge Bouchard 155 in the shipping channel west of the Skyway Sunshine Bridge south of Mullett Key in Tampa Bay, FL. Three emergencies occurred: 1) the Balsa 37, carrying phosphate rock, was listing and in danger of capsizing; 2) the Ocean 255 was loaded with jet fuel, gasoline, and diesel fuel, and burning out of control; and 3) the Bouchard 155 was spilling 8000 barrels of # fuel into Tampa Bay. Within 18 hours, the Balsa 37 was run aground to prevent sinking, the Ocean 255’s fire was extinguished, and the GST main focus was on the spill response of the Bouchard 155.

Location: 29 miles southeast of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts

Info: The Argo Merchant ran aground 29 nautical miles southeast of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. High winds and 10 foot seas contributed to the accident. When the Argo Merchant requested permission to dump cargo in an effort to control the ship, permission was denied. As the weather worsened the next day, the crew was evacuated and 2 days later, the vessel began to buckle, breaking apart two days later. Currents carried the spilled oil away from the shorelines and beaches of Nantucket.

Info: Traveling from the Arabian Gulf to Le Havre, France, the Amoco Cadiz ran aground during stormy weather three miles off the coast of Brittany on Portsall Rocks near Brest, France. Rough seas and an isolated location contributed to a 2 week delay in clean up efforts. Then, severe weather caused the ship to break up before any oil could be removed from the ship.
